Sixth Week of School

This week we have been working on making predictions.  Thinking about what is coming next in the story we are reading.  In math we practiced adding by making a ten.  Using our doubles and doubles plus one facts and making a ten will help us when adding 3 numbers.  We had our first butterfly hatch and it was a boy.  The class named it Thunderbolt.  We let him go on Tuesday and we hope he will fly away to Mexico.  Here is a link to our Daily 5 ipick video. http://www.southadams.k12.in.us/webpages/agoodwin/the.cfm?subpage=1376017 It is on our class website on a sub page under the Daily 5 section.  The subpage is called Daily 5 in class.  These are some of our first ipod projects this year.  We made these last week but not everyone in class had a chance because we only get 5 ipods one day a week.  The others who did not make on this time will get a chance the next time.  http://www.southadams.k12.in.us/webpages/agoodwin/class.cfm  These are also on our class website under Class Projects 2011-2012.

Fifth Week of School

This past week we spent more time on main idea and details for reading.  During writing time we learned the 5 parts of a friendly letter (heading, greeting, body, closing and signature) and practiced writing a letter to someone. We learned about Helen Keller and how she was blind and deaf in Social Studies.  We practice spelling our names in sign language and tried to spell words to someone in their hands like Helen Keller had to learn to sign.  We had a few more caterpillars make a chrysalis.  No butterfly yet but I know we should have one this next week.

Fourth Week of school

We had lots of fun during our first inside recesses this past week.

In reading this past week we worked on main idea and details.  We wrote personal narratives about our best friends by following a writing rubric for the first time.  Some students even had time to post on their kidblog too.  We worked on ordinal numbers, number lines, and review in math this week.  We will be starting a new chapter next week.  We learned about Monarch butterflies in Science and will continue to study them a little this next week too.  We have a chrysalis and one was hanging as a J on Friday so I am sure we will have another one on Monday.  Hopefully we will have our first butterfly next week.

Third Week of School

This week we talked about Beginning, Middle and End of a story.  We worked on greater than, less than and equal to, for math.  We also worked on number order with a number line.  In science we have been talking about observing and recording information and the tools you need for testing things.  We went out to the little ditch behind the school and looked for milkweed.  We didn't find any Monarch caterpillars but did see a large wooly worm, a pretty bright green leopard frog, and a Monarch butterfly egg.  We looked at some very tiny Monarch caterpillars that I brought in from home so the students will know what to look for this weekend. Hope you have good luck finding them.  Happy Hunting!
